Eastern Standard Time (EST)

Eastern Standard Time (EST) is the standard-time clock used in the Eastern Time zone at UTC−05:00, five hours behind Coordinated Universal Time.

EST is used during the standard-time part of the year in Eastern Time regions of the United States and Canada. Some Caribbean and nearby regions also keep a UTC−05:00 clock year-round, although their official local name may differ.

EST is a fixed standard-time code and does not change its own offset. Most Eastern Time locations switch to Eastern Daylight Time (EDT, UTC−04:00) on the second Sunday in March and return to EST on the first Sunday in November; some places stay on standard time all year.

Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)

Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) is a UTC+00:00 time standard historically based on mean solar time at Greenwich. For everyday civil-time conversion, GMT and UTC show the same clock time.

The United Kingdom uses GMT during winter. Iceland and several West African countries—including Ghana, Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire, Mali, and Liberia—use a UTC+00:00 civil clock throughout the year.

GMT itself is a fixed zero-offset standard and does not move. In the United Kingdom, clocks change from GMT to British Summer Time on the last Sunday in March and return to GMT on the last Sunday in October.

EST to GMT Formula

Add 5 hours to EST to get GMT. The formula uses the UTC offset difference for these time zones.

GMT = EST + 5 hoursAfter applying the formula, check the date: the result can fall on the previous or next calendar day.
