A leap year is a calendar year with 366 days instead of 365. The added date is February 29, but the reason for it begins with a fraction of a day that the calendar cannot show.
A year that makes room for the fraction
Earth does not complete its trip around the Sun in exactly 365 days. It takes about 365.242 days. A 365-day calendar leaves a little time uncounted each year, so the leap-day system gathers that difference and returns it to the calendar as a complete date.
