A leap year is a calendar year with 366 days instead of 365. The added date is February 29, but the reason for it begins with a fraction of a day that the calendar cannot show.

What changes — and what stays the same

February gains one date, the year gains one day, and dates after February move two weekdays forward in the following year instead of one. The month order, seasons and twelve-month structure stay the same.

The hidden weekly rhythm

A common year is 52 weeks plus 1 day. A leap year is 52 weeks plus 2 days. That extra remainder is why the weekday pattern shifts faster after a leap year.

A correction, not an extra season

February 29 does not make Earth travel more slowly or create a longer season. It corrects the calendar’s running total so dates continue to match the seasonal year over long periods.

When Was the First Leap Year?

There is no single first leap year for every civilization because calendars developed in different places and used different kinds of extra days or months.

Before the familiar leap day

Ancient calendars were already correcting their year by inserting extra time. Some used additional days; others inserted an entire month when the calendar moved away from the seasons.

45 BCE: the familiar repeating system

Julius Caesar introduced the Julian calendar with a 365-day common year and an extra day on a repeating four-year cycle. This is the clearest starting point for the leap-year pattern familiar today.

1582: the modern rule is refined

The Gregorian calendar kept the four-year rhythm but removed three leap years every 400 years through the century and 400-year exceptions used today.
